15 Years ago, a new weekly Thursday night dance party had landed, The Root Down. By providing an alternative to the typical party scene in LA at the time, Root Down quickly became an outlet and meeting place for people of many cultures to join together to get down to different flavors of music they could all enjoy. Original Root Down all-stars Miles, Loslito, DJ Dusk, Egon, and Wyatt Case would keep the dance floor moving with sounds of classic and new hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae, latin, afro-beat, breaks and more while showcasing special guests every week from LA & beyond!
Since it’s birth, Root Down has not only played host to but has helped break artists in the community including: The Breakestra (originally the in-house Root Down band), Madlib, Black Eyed Peas, Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, DJ Exile, People Under The Stairs, Orgone, The Procussions, Z-Trip, Cut Chemist, The Rebirth, and several others. By the peak of Root Down’s days, the soundsystem had taken some new family members into it’s circle including DJs Sloe Poke, Expo, Ervin Arana, Amani, and Jedi. In 2006, the Root Down lost one of the key members, the late-great DJ Dusk. His death dealt a heavy toll to the crew and many loyal fans. A few years later, changes in the economy eventually took it’s toll on several grass-roots parties in the LA community and Root Down, after operating every Thursday for the last 13 years, was forced to close their doors as a weekly… of course going out in fashion with a grand finale featuring a Root Down all-star lineup.
On Monday night, April 9th, the old band is getting back together for one night only… all to celebrate 15 years since the start of Root Down. The whole crew will be taking over at MOM LA (Motown On Mondays) for a special edition night: ROOT DOWN DOES MOTOWN. DJs Music Man Miles, Sloe Poke, Expo, Ervin Arana, Jedi, and Amani (aka Burt Blackarach) will be in the mix bringing you nonstop Motown classics, hidden gems, remixes, and soul relatives.
We look forward to many of the original Root Down family joining us for a trip down memory lane and a special celebration of the legacy of one of LA’s longest running hip-hop/soul/funk parties. As always, we dedicate this to our dearly departed brother in the mix, DJ Dusk Uno (there with us in spirit)!
GET READY TO GO TO MOTOWN!!
